Pierre Gasly’s car burst into flames with Pierre Gasly inside the car in a horrifying moment at the Singapore Grand Prix. The Alpha Tauri’s cockpit caught fire moments after Gasly returned to the pits in second practice. The fire appeared tio come from the top of the roll hoop as mechanics tried to roll the car back into the pit garage. Gasly quickly jumped out of the car as the fire intensified before mechanics managed to put it out with an extinguisher. However, the incident did not rule the Frenchman out of the session as he returned to the track moments later. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Ted Kravitz said: “Everything’s been sorted out. There’s been a bit of tape that’s been out over the fire damaged engine cover. “The team are telling me the fire started when the fuel breather was connected to the car but it was put out quickly and then he’s going back out on the circuit. I haven’t heard that before. I’ve had a fuel breather put in the wrong way and supercharged the air in the system. “That was Kevin Magnussen with that fire in the Renault in Malaysia a few years ago.” Kravitz also seemed to suggest Alpha Tauri had made an error which could have caused the blast. He added: “Normally when its pushed back into the garage they put a breather on it so the air in the fuel tank can breathe. And then they keep it on when they put fuel in or take fuel out to allow the air to come out of the fuel tank. “So what I don’t understand is, because I wasn’t here, was why that was done when the car was still in the pit box. I just need to get my head around that.”
