Max Verstappen still had to be calmed down after a frustrating end to the Singapore Grand Prix, Christian Horner has claimed. Saturday’s qualifying session was hugely eventful with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull all in contention to take pole position. It all came down to who was coming over the line last it seemed as the track was drying with each lap. Verstappen appeared to have timed it perfectly, aborting what appeared to be his final lap for one last throw at the dice with just seconds on the clock as he crossed the line. And the reigning F1 champion was on course to snatch pole away from Charles Leclerc heading into the final few corners. But Verstappen was left incensed when, at the last minute, he was told to box and abort the lap altogether. It became clear that Red Bull were concerned about the level of fuel in Verstappen’s car required to provide a specific size of sample to the FIA after qualifying. Had Verstappen’s car been empty of fuel then the Dutchman would be forced to take a penalty into Sunday’s race and start from the pitlane.Instead, he starts eighth but Horner has admitted that Verstappen needed some calming down in the Red Bull garage after their mistake. “He obviously blew a valve but it’s completely understandable,” Horner said.”We were pushing too much on the optimum, the track ramped up, we got an extra lap in so we were perfectly positioned to get that lap as the clock was… to be the last car over the line but the fuel was just too marginal. Rather than take the risk of not being able to produce a sample and starting from the pitlane, we took the tough decision to abort the lap.DON’T MISS
